Cultivating- Adaptability Resilience.

Lets Break These Down..
- Resilience- Is the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change. It’s the capacity to bounce back from difficult or challenging life experiences, whether they are mental, emotional, or behavioral. Resilience is not about avoiding stress or adversity, but rather about developing the flexibility and adaptability to cope with it and maintain well-being
- Adaptability- is the ability to adjust or modify one’s behavior, thinking, or actions in response to changing circumstances or new situations. It involves being flexible and open to change, learning from new experiences, and effectively coping with both internal and external changes. In essence, adaptability is about navigating uncertainty and successfully responding to evolving conditions
Why are these two things such a big deal? What makes them so important? Well lets talk about it.. How do we even know if we are any good at either of these? Well lets identify how to see where we maybe stand with ourselves.
Understanding Resilience.
- Some of the main characteristics of a person who has Resilience are awareness, self-control, problem-solving skills, and social support. Resilient people are aware of situations, their emotional reactions, and the behavior of those around them. Notice how you respond or react to situations. Do you go 0-100 just like that!? Or do you keep your composure maybe just for the most part lol. Evaluate yourself for some time to study yourself. You may be surprised. Speaking from personal experience I was surprised in certain areas I thought I was better in than I really was!
- Resilience is the process of being able to adapt well and bounce back quickly in times of stress. This stress leak into our families or relationship problems, serious health problems, problems in the workplace or even financial problems to name a few.
- Research has shown that resiliency is pretty common. People tend to demonstrate resilience more often than you think. But I always believe we are suppose to be on a continual path of growth. So lets dive deeper if we need to.
- Demonstrating resiliency doesn’t necessarily mean that you have not suffered difficulty or distress. It also doesn’t mean you have not experienced emotional pain or sadness. The road to resilience is often paved with emotional stress and strain.
- This integration is beginning to foster an important shift in thinking too! Clinicians and researchers are starting to sense the importance of focusing on evaluating and teaching methods to enhance resilience rather than continually focusing on or examining the negative consequences of trauma or stress.
- Resilience and emotional intelligence have been found to be positively correlated with each other. People who have high levels of emotional intelligence perceive themselves to be more resilient, that is. More capable to cope with adversity and dealing with negative experiences.
- While some people can tend to be more naturally resilient. It is also a skill that can be strengthened. Looking at situations in more positive ways, getting support from others, and focusing on what can be controlled are helpful strategies also. Good stress management skills can also help us become more resilient.
What some other people are saying about Resilience!
Now lets look at Adaptability..
- Adaptability and resilience, while related, have distinct meanings. Adaptability is the ability to adjust to new or changing conditions, while resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties.
- The first half of adaptability skills: Being Flexible.
- Flexibility is characterized by these five attributes- Being confident, tolerant, empathic, positive and respectful. The first attribute, confidence, means that you believe in yourself. You trust your own judgment and resourcefulness.
- The second flexibility attribute is tolerance- That is, being open to accepting opinions and practices different from your own ways. We can easily think of people who are intolerant of others because of religious or political beliefs. Those intolerant folks may attract like-minded people, but they don’t gain the attention of a opposite audience.
- Third is empathy. One root of the word empathy is pathos, which means “feeling” in Greek. Empathy is a term for deep feeling. It means, “I feel what you feel. I can put myself in your shoes.”
- The second half of adaptability skills: Versatility
- Versatility traits are- resilience, vision, attentiveness, competence and self-correction. Resilience means knowing how to overcome setbacks, barriers and limited options. Mainly, it has to do with your emotional strength.
- Attentiveness. That means being aware of elements in your environment. This adaptability skill can be as simple as noticing when someone is getting bored, or sensing that now is not the right time to present your ideas. It’s knowing when to act and when not to act. It means paying attention to more than your own needs.
- Competence. Competence involves a problem-solving ability that goes beyond your specialties. If you don’t know how to answer a question or fix a problem? You can find someone who does. It means having a can-do attitude as they say and following through on it.
- Lastly is Self-correction. That means that once you initiate a project! You ask for feedback and place high priority on problem-solving, not on being right. Having this adaptability skill means you’re able to see when you’ve developed a nonproductive pattern in your behavior. It’s being able to say, “I think this approach isn’t working. Maybe I’d better try something different.”
