Why Taking Chances makes you GREAT!

Great Message:

Playing It Safe Makes You Good…But Taking Chances Makes You Great.

As I have coached/managed and mentored people over the years, I’ve noticed quite a lot the tug-of-war people battle with between comfort and courage. I’m also sure you’ve witnessed this yourself! On one hand, playing it safe promises security and a predictable living. On the other hand, boldness allows risk, adventure, and the potential for greatness. Let’s talk about why playing it safe leads to a good life, BUT being bold unlocks a great one.
Let’s explore why playing it safe can only take you so far, and why embracing boldness is the only path to greatness.

The Comfort Zone: The Land of Good Enough

First, let’s acknowledge the comfort zone for what it is. A place of safety, right? We all crave stability in some way. It’s human nature to seek security, to avoid danger, and to stick to routines. Playing it safe means following the rules, making basic practical choices, and minimizing risks. There’s value here, though. You can build a solid, respectable life by being cautious. You’ll likely avoid major setbacks, keep your stress levels manageable, and maintain steady progress. So I get it!

But here’s the catch. The comfort zone is designed for survival, not for having a meaningful, impactful life. If your goal is to be “good” at what you do. Good at your job, a good friend, a good partner. Playing it safe will get you there more than likely. The world is full of people who are good. They work hard, follow the guidelines, steer clear of controversy, and do what’s expected. And there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. But if you’re reading this, I suspect you want more than just “good.”

Why Playing It Safe Can Hold You Back

When you play it safe, you’re essentially limiting your growth. You stick to what you know, which means you rarely stretch yourself. The most significant personal and professional growth happens when we step outside that zone. So why haven’t you done it yet? Think about the last time you learned something new or made a meaningful change in your life.
Playing it safe also keeps you in the realm of the expected. You follow the well-trodden path, but greatness NEVER resides there. It’s in the unexplored territories, the places where few have ventured, that the most rewarding discoveries are made. What’s crazy, too? Think about the last time you tried something new? Was it as bad as what you made it up in your head to be? More than likely not. Been there done that.

The Power of Boldness: Where Greatness Begins

Greatness is never achieved by accident. It’s the result of bold, intentional decisions and a willingness to embrace uncertainty. When you take chances, you open yourself up to the possibility of “failure”. But also to the possibility of extraordinary success. But we know that “failure” is another word for learning. Changing how you view it makes all the difference.
Being bold means:
= Saying yes to opportunities that scare you
= Trusting your gut even when others doubt you
= Speaking up for what you believe in
= Admitting when you don’t have all the answers
= Trying, failing, and trying again
= This isn’t about being reckless. It’s about calculated risk. The kind that stretches you just beyond your current limits.

Real Growth Demands Discomfort

One of my favorite principles is that “growth and comfort do not coexist.” Whether it’s starting a new business, moving to a new city, or having a difficult conversation, growth comes from stepping into discomfort and trusting that you’ll find your footing along the way.
When you make bold moves, you learn faster. Because you’re stepping out into something new, your brain is more alert and on. You’ll pick up skills you never knew you needed. You develop abilities like resilience, grit, and adaptability. Some qualities that set truly great people apart.

How to Start Being Bold

If you’ve been used to playing it safe, the idea of taking chances can feel scary or intimidating. But you don’t have to leap into the unknown all at once. Start small! Identify one area of your life where you’ve been holding back. What’s one bold step you could take? Maybe it’s scheduling a meeting with someone you’d like to learn from, or signing up for a class that challenges you. Or as little as to pick up that book that will help you grow as a person that you have been putting off.
The key is to build your “boldness muscle.” Each time you take a risk, you prove to yourself that you’re capable of more than you thought. Over time, boldness actually becomes a habit! Then greatness follows with time.

Final Thoughts: Choose Greatness

Playing it safe will always have its place. It’s a good strategy for survival, for maintaining what you have. If you want to look back on your life with pride, knowing you gave it your all. You HAVE to be willing to take chances. It’s a requirement.
So, what’s your next bold move? Remember: you weren’t born to be just good.
