Why Taking the Hard Path Pays Off..

Taking the Path of Least Resistance: Why the Hard Road Is Worth It (And How to Choose It)
So as your personal coach and cheerleader here! I want to talk about something that’s both sneaky and powerful. Its the urge to always take the path of least resistance. You know what I mean! The easy route, the shortcut, the comfortable choices that asks nothing more of you than you’re already giving. But what if I told you that while it might feel good in the moment and safe, the easy road very rarely leads to the results you truly want? Knowing that then why do we keep choosing the path of least resistance?
Let’s dive into why taking the hard path- yes, the one that scares you can actually help transform your life. Plus, I’ll share some practices to help you resist that voice of comfort and choose the path that leads to real growth and satisfaction.
The Path of Least Resistance: Why It’s So Tempting
Let’s be honest here. As humans, we’re wired to avoid pain, discomfort, and uncertainty. The brain goes into a protective state. Our brains love routines and predictability because they keep us safe. In that safe space the opportunities for uncertainty are limited. That’s why it feels so natural to pick the easy option. So whether that’s skipping the gym, putting off a tough conversation, or choosing Netflix over studying for that big exam or meeting.
But here’s the catch. The easy route often leads us to stagnation. It’s like walking on a treadmill! Lots of movement, but you’re not actually getting anywhere new. The path of least resistance keeps you in your comfort zone, and while that might feel cozy and safe, it rarely leads to meaningful growth or fulfillment.
Why the Hard Paths Pay Off
Imagine two versions of yourself.. One who always takes the easy way out, and one who consistently chooses the tougher route. Even when it’s uncomfortable. Who will grow more? Who is more resilient, capable, and confident?
Taking the hard path means:
Learning new skills
Building resilience
Gaining confidence
Achieving things you didn’t think where possible.
When you opt for the difficult route, you’re investing in yourself. You’re telling yourself, “I’m worth the effort. My goals matter.” Over time, small acts of courage compound into big results. Its so Important to continue to challenge yourself. You can have both peace in your life and challenges at the same time! I have heard over and over about this thought people have about, their life being peaceful right now, and don’t want to invite challenges in. They dont want to have their peace interrupted. I understand that to a point. But Invite challenges into your life! You can focus on having peace in your life and accompany it with challenges. You can have both. The key is to not allow the struggle from the challenges to rule and consume the rest of your life. Protect your peace as best as you can. But don’t rely on peace to get you to the type of life your wanting or deserve.
Real-Life Examples:
Career: Saying yes to a challenging project at work, instead of sticking with what you’re already good at.
Fitness: Signing up for a 5K when you’ve never run before, instead of sticking with your daily walk or routine.
Relationships: Having an honest conversation about your feelings instead of avoiding conflict.
In each case though, the hard path can feel daunting! But it’s also rewarding. You’ll surprise yourself with what you can accomplish.
Practical Ways to Fight the Urge for the Easy Route
Okay, so you’re convinced, the hard path is worth it? But how do you actually choose it!? Especially when the easy option is tempting you? Here are some practical strategies:
1. Notice Your Patterns
Awareness is the first step. Start paying attention to those moments when you’re tempted to take the easy way out. Is it when you’re tired? Stressed? Anxious? Recognizing your triggers helps you pause before you react automatically. This takes some conscious effort. Take the time to really understand yourself.
2. Ask Yourself: What Will My Future Self Thank Me For?
Before making a decision, pause and consider which option your future self would appreciate more. This simple question can shift your focus from short-term comfort to long-term growth!
3. Set Small-Challenges
You don’t have to overhaul your entire life overnight. Start small. Challenge yourself to do one uncomfortable thing each day. Maybe it’s speaking up in a meeting or waking up 15 minutes earlier. Build your “grit muscle” gradually. But this is something that with continual practice and effort you can get better at.
4. Embrace Discomfort as a Teacher
Reframe discomfort as a sign you’re growing. When you feel the urge to bail, remind yourself that every champion was once a beginner who kept going through the tough spots. You will get better at being comfortable in the uncomfortable. 5. Visualize the Payoff
Picture yourself on the other side of the hard path. How does it feel to have accomplished something challenging? Hold onto that feeling! It’s your motivation to push through.
6. Find an Accountability Buddy
Share your goals with someone who will encourage you when you want to quit. Sometimes, knowing someone else is cheering you on makes all the difference.
7. Celebrate Small Wins
Every time you take the tougher route, celebrate! Reward yourself for showing up, even if the outcome isn’t perfect. Your consistency is more important than perfection.
When Is the Easy Path Okay?
Let’s be real. You don’t have to choose the hard route every time. There are moments when rest, recovery, and self-compassion are exactly what you need. The key is to be honest with yourself about whether you’re truly taking care of yourself, or just avoiding growth out of fear or doubt.
Final Thoughts.
The next time you’re faced with a choice between the easy path and the hard one, remember this.. You’re capable of more than you realize. Growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone, even if it’s just one small step at a time.
So, as your coach and someone who deeply cares about you succeeding.. I’m challenging YOU! Pick one area of your life where you tend to take the path of least resistance. Just one! This week, choose the harder road. Notice how it feels. Are you still alive, was it as bad as you thought? Or afterwards where you like, damn that wasn’t that bad. Show yourself you have the courage. And remember, every time you do, you’re building a stronger, more resilient, and more fulfilled YOU. You never know what choosing the harder path may do. It could possibly lighten the weight for someone else down the road.
Keep pushing! #Projectabetterme
